As at Lourdes, France, pilgrims come to her church, hoping for a miracle from the tiny Virgin, often approaching her on their knees. I painted one of them, a woman carrying a sick baby, and I imagined the threatening presence of Santa Muerta, whose image is seen all over Mexico, standing in her way.
